Ceredigion County Council has launched a public consultation on proposed taxi fare changes following a request from a local operator to significantly increase tariffs across the county.
The operator has asked the council to approve a rise equating to an average 23.7% increase, citing higher operating costs including fuel, vehicle maintenance, wages and purchase prices. Taxi fares in Ceredigion have remained unchanged since 2022, prompting the formal review under the council’s statutory responsibilities.
Under the proposal submitted, the starting fare for the first half mile would increase by £1, alongside an additional 2p per one-tenth of a mile thereafter. The operator argued the uplift would bring local fares more in line with neighbouring authorities such as Carmarthenshire County Council and Gwynedd Council.
However, the council’s Licensing Committee has opted to consult on a lower increase of around 7%, describing it as a more proportionate response while still recognising cost pressures within the trade.

Illustrative figures show the first half-mile fare under Tariff 1 rising from £3.50 to £3.70, with incremental mileage charges also adjusted slightly. Waiting time charges would remain unchanged at 25p per minute under the committee’s proposal.
The consultation, open until 8 May 2026, invites residents, passengers and industry stakeholders to submit their views via the council’s website before a final decision is made.
