CHECK THE RULES AND AVOID FINES: Surprising and crazy driving laws found abroad this summer

Motorists heading abroad this summer are being advised to check local traffic rules carefully, as some countries enforce surprisingly strict and unusual laws that could catch British drivers out.

According to car leasing platform LeaseLoco.com, actions that may seem harmless in the UK can lead to serious penalties elsewhere. A lack of awareness around these rules could result in unexpected fines or even legal trouble.

In Cyprus, for example, eating or drinking behind the wheel is banned, including snacks or water. Offending drivers face an €85 fine. In the UAE, camels have right of way on the roads, reflecting their cultural importance.

One rarely enforced but still valid law in Canada’s Prince Edward Island requires drivers to sound their horn when overtaking. Meanwhile, in Germany, running out of fuel on the autobahn is not only inconvenient but also illegal. Motorists face penalties for stopping unnecessarily on these fast-moving roads.

Other peculiar rules include a requirement in Australia to lock your car when unattended, even for a short time. In Japan, splashing pedestrians by driving through puddles can attract a fine.

Some regions in Spain have introduced bans on carrying inflatable dolls in public, including in vehicles. In New York City, unlike most US areas, turning right on a red light is not allowed unless a sign specifically permits it.

Switzerland prohibits car washing at home on Sundays due to local noise restrictions, and in India, drivers must carry a Pollution Under Control certificate or risk a fine.

South Africa also stands out for not requiring drivers to hold car insurance, although motorists are still strongly advised to have cover.

John Wilmot, CEO and founder of car leasing deals site LeaseLoco.com, said: “Many drivers don’t realise that some of the most unexpected road laws can result in serious fines or even criminal charges when travelling abroad.

“Something as simple as running out of fuel on Germany’s autobahn isn’t just inconvenient - it’s actually illegal and can lead to a hefty fine.

“Rules like these may seem unusual to British motorists, but they’re taken very seriously in other countries.

“So before heading off on a road trip abroad, it’s essential to research the local traffic laws - not just the obvious ones but the more obscure rules too. A little preparation can save you from some very costly surprises.”
