Taxi marshals in the Eastern City Business Improvement District have assisted more than 77,000 passengers since December 2023, according to newly released figures, underlining the role of structured rank management in the Square Mile’s night-time economy.
The BID reported that 77,043 passengers have used the service, including 12,819 women travelling alone. The initiative is designed to help people access licensed taxis safely and efficiently, particularly during peak evening periods when demand is high.
Over the past year, the wider scheme has supported 20,323 taxi journeys, equating to 36,354 individual passengers. The data suggests sustained operational demand for marshalled taxi services as part of efforts to manage late-night transport flows.
The taxi marshal programme forms part of a broader safety initiative led by Eastern City BID, which includes coordination with local partners to improve conditions for workers, residents and visitors leaving the area after hours.

By providing a visible presence at ranks, marshals aim to reduce disorder, streamline passenger queues and support drivers, while also contributing to perceptions of safety across the district.
Eastern City BID said it remains committed to maintaining a “safe, welcoming district” through continued partnership working, with taxi operations playing a central role in supporting mobility and safety in the City of London.
