A joint operation between neighbourhood policing officers and Colchester City Council’s licensing team led to the revocation of a taxi licence after the vehicle was found to be unfit for the road, according to information released by Essex Police.
The checks, carried out in Colchester as part of road safety activity, focused on verifying driver documentation and assessing vehicle condition. Officers said the initiative aimed to ensure licensed taxis remained compliant with local regulatory standards and safe for passenger transport.
During one of the deployments, a taxi was judged to fall below roadworthiness requirements. Police issued the driver with a Traffic Offence Report (TOR), and council licensing officers revoked the vehicle’s taxi licence on the spot. Authorities did not disclose the specific defect or mechanical issue involved.
The operation forms part of wider collaborative work between Essex Police and Colchester’s licensing team to monitor compliance across the sector. Local authorities have increased scrutiny in recent years, responding to concerns around vehicle maintenance, insurance validity and adherence to council licensing terms.
For operators, the enforcement activity highlights the operational risks associated with lapses in vehicle upkeep. A revoked licence can remove a vehicle from service immediately, affecting both availability and income while also triggering additional inspections before any potential relicensing.
An Essex Police spokesperson said: “Officers from the neighbourhood policing team have been working with Colchester City Councils licensing team to ensure the safety people being carried in taxi's across the city.
“Officers have been stopping and engaging with taxi drivers to ensure their documentation is in order, and their vehicles are in a safe state to carry passengers.
“As a result of one of the deployments one taxi licence was revoked due to the taxi not being fit for the road, and the driver was issued with a traffic offence report.”
