Crawley Borough Council has confirmed it will not increase Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licensing fees and charges for the coming year, holding costs steady for the local taxi trade.
The decision comes at a time when inflation remains above zero, meaning the fee freeze represents an effective real terms reduction for licensed drivers and operators, easing some of the financial pressure facing the sector.
The council said the move follows a full review of its taxi and private hire licensing costs. It concluded that existing fees remain sufficient to cover the cost of administering and enforcing the licensing regime.
Licensing authorities are required by law to ensure taxi and private hire services are self funding, with fees set to recover costs rather than generate surplus income.
Councillor Yasmin Khan, Cabinet member for Public Protection at Crawley Borough Council, said: “The decision to freeze current fees and charges for Hackney Carriage and Private Hire taxis is extremely welcome. We are aware of the financial pressures that the trade is facing and this is a real terms cut to the charges. The position will continue to be kept under review, but it is positive that we can maintain current fee levels for the time being, and I am pleased we are doing so.”
