German cab firm Tesla Taxi Aschaffenburg, have become the first in the country to accept crypto currency payment Dogecoin, as well as a number of other similar modes of payments such as Bitcoin.

A spokesperson for the company said: "As already teased, from now on we are the first taxi in Germany that accepts the crypto currency Dogecoin and others (Bitcoin, Ethereum).

"You can't currently pay for a Tesla with it, but you can for an unforgettable ride in our Tesla taxi."

How does it work?

The passenger is in possession of a crypto currency. They will then install a wallet app on their smartphone which will allow them to send the value of the trip converted to crypto currency before, during or after the trip.

When speaking on why the firm has chosen to introduce such payment methods, a spokesperson added: "Because I find the topic exciting and I'm curious myself whether crypto currency can be used as a means of payment in everyday life or in the taxi business and whether there is any interest among customers here."

The inspiration for turning to Dogecoin came from the owner of the taxi firm's son, as well as the influence Tesla boss Elon Musk has had on the industry.

The spokesperson concluded: "Dogecoin differs from the usual crypto currency by its creation. Thought as a fun currency, with a great community behind it, the Dogecoin is a more sympathetic currency to me than for example; Bitcoin.

"It should also be emphasised that the Dogecoin network consumes significantly less electricity than other crypto currencies."
