Cyclists in Italy will face stringent new regulations if proposed road safety measures come into effect under the Government's latest plans. The new benchmark will require cyclists to wear helmets, have indicators, licence plates and insurance.
The country's deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Matteo Salvini, announced the proposed measures on Wednesday 7 June in order to reduce the number of road traffic fatalities each year.

The changes to the Italian Highway Code would also apply to soft mobility vehicles including electric scooters. Last year Italy recorded 3,210 deaths on its roads, a "woeful" figure according to Salvini.
He went on to describe an incident in northern Italy, where a boy on a scooter was killed by another person travelling on a motorbike, as one reason behind the move.
New legislation may also include a lifetime driving ban for those found operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs.
Salvini, a member of the right-wing Brothers of Italy party and led by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, said the measures would introduce "more rules, more education and more safety on Italian roads".
