Becoming a London taxi driver involves more than simply knowing the streets within the city. One crucial part of the final stage of “The Knowledge of London” is mastering the routes around Heathrow Airport.

The Knowledge is the rigorous training process that all London taxi drivers must undergo. It typically takes years to complete and requires memorising thousands of streets and routes within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross.

However, the exam doesn’t end there. Once this core area is mastered, drivers must then pass a test on suburban routes, which includes extensive knowledge of Heathrow and its various terminals.

Navigating Heathrow is a challenge in itself. Drivers are required to learn the specific road names leading to the airport as well as the internal road layout of one of the world’s biggest airports spanning four working terminals. This is vital for serving the large volume of passengers travelling to and from the airport.

To prepare for this, Knowledge students are provided with a list of specific routes and runs. They will drive these routes and revise them multiple times to fully memorise the road network, ensuring they are ready to serve customers efficiently once they qualify.

The Knowledge process remains a unique and essential training regime, ensuring that London’s taxi drivers are some of the best-prepared in the world.
