The driver of a vehicle which was recorded hogging the middle lane of a motorway has been slammed by police for failing to be aware of their surroundings.

Officers for Surrey's Road Policing Unit said the driver couldn't have been concentrating properly whilst driving, instead, continued to hog the middle lane causing the cars behind to slow down and risk crossing two lanes just to overtake.

The police used their official Twitter account to highlight the incident and remind road users that when driving, they should keep to the left lane unless overtaking.

In the dashcam footage, the Land Rover Discovery can be seen driving way below the recommended speed limit, yet failing to move across to the left lane to allow other vehicles to pass-by.

One vehicle that was driving along lane 1, can be seen crossing two lanes, just so they could pass the Discovery.

Another vehicle can be seen stuck behind the Discovery before moving into lane 1, seemingly unsure of how to pass the vehicle safely.

In addition to hogging the middle lane, officers found the vehicle MOT to be out of date. The driver was reported for both offences.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The Discovery in lane 2 was hogging the middle lane - an indication of a driver who isn't concentrating / aware of their surroundings.

"The MOT was also more than a month out of date. Driver stopped and reported for both offences. Keep left unless overtaking."
