Fuel prices dropped slightly in October following September’s increases, according to the latest figures from RAC Fuel Watch.
The average cost of petrol fell by 0.58p per litre, from 135.55p at the start of the month to 134.97p by the end. Diesel prices also edged down, falling 0.81p from 143.38p to 142.57p. The change means a typical 55-litre tank now costs £74.23 to fill with petrol and £78.41 with diesel.
Supermarket forecourts remain the cheapest option for drivers. Across the UK’s four largest supermarket chains, average prices are 131.99p for petrol and 139.44p for diesel. That’s roughly 3p per litre cheaper than the national average, saving around £1.65 per full tank.
Drivers in Northern Ireland continue to benefit from the lowest prices in the UK. The region’s average petrol price is 127.9p per litre, while diesel sits at 133.9p. This results in savings of around £4 on petrol and nearly £5 on diesel for a typical family car compared to the UK average.
Among individual forecourts, Sainsbury’s Ipswich site on Hadleigh Road is selling petrol at just 124.9p per litre, one of the lowest prices in the country. Morrisons’ Bishop Auckland site is offering diesel at 134.7p per litre, among the cheapest available outside Northern Ireland.
The small reduction comes as global oil prices stabilise and wholesale fuel costs ease slightly. However, the RAC has warned that while these cuts are welcome, pump prices remain higher than many analysts believe they should be given the current wholesale market.
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “It’s good to see prices at the pumps have fallen slightly in October, reversing the increase drivers experienced in September.
“Our analysis shows that while it’s cheaper on average to fill up at supermarkets, it’s also worth seeking out low-priced independent forecourts that can offer great value petrol and diesel. The best advice is to keep a close eye out for low prices on your normal routes, or better still, use the myRAC app to search for the best prices in your area.”
