Drivers are set to benefit from smoother journeys this Easter, with 1,127 miles of roadworks being lifted to reduce congestion during the bank holiday weekend.
National Highways has announced that nearly all major roads across England will be clear of roadworks over the Easter break. Approximately 97.5% of key routes will be free from roadwork restrictions, ensuring faster travel times for millions of drivers, including the 19.1 million estimated car trips on Good Friday alone.
This move aims to ease travel for those heading out on holiday or visiting family, helping to minimise delays and make the Easter getaway more efficient.
The lifting of roadworks comes as part of the Government’s effort to support drivers during peak travel times, boosting connectivity and encouraging smoother traffic flow across the country. With the added pressure of busy roads over the holiday period, this decision is expected to improve the overall travel experience, reducing time spent stuck in traffic.
In addition to the roadwork adjustments, the Government has taken further steps to ease the strain on motorists. Local councils receive an extra £1.6 billion to repair road surfaces, which will help mitigate the impact of potholes known to cost drivers up to £460 in repairs.
Fuel duty remains frozen at its current rate for another year. This measure is intended to provide a further saving of around £59 to the average driver, complementing the benefits of clearer roads during peak travel times.
Together, these measures could save motorists up to £500 a year. The combined effect of fewer roadworks, improved road conditions and stable fuel pricing will not only ease Easter journeys but also support smoother travel in the months ahead.
Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said: “Cutting journey times and saving drivers money every year is all part of our Plan for Change to raise living standards and put more money in people’s pockets.
“We are tackling the real problems that drivers face by lifting 1,127 miles of roadworks over Easter and cracking down on disruptive streetworks to make journeys to see loved ones as smooth as possible.
“This Government is also saving drivers up to £500 a year, with councils soon to receive their record £1.6 billion pothole funding and the continued freeze on fuel duty.”
