EDINBURGH NEW YEAR’S EVE ROAD CLOSURES: What roads close and when?

Updated: Jan 3

As Edinburgh gears up for its renowned annual New Year's Eve celebration, taxi services across the city are bracing for a significant spike in demand. This surge is anticipated in response to extensive road closures planned throughout central Edinburgh to accommodate the fireworks display and festive activities.

The city's road closure schedule is extensive, commencing from 8am on Wednesday 27 December and continuing until 5m on Tuesday 2 January. Key thoroughfares such as Castle Street, from Princes Street to Rose Street, will be inaccessible during this period, marking the onset of traffic diversions and heightened demand for taxis.

The closures intensify from 7pm on Saturday 30 December to 10am on Monday 1 January, affecting major streets including Frederick Street and Waverley Bridge. Additionally, from 5pm on Sunday 31 December, to 6am on Monday 1 January, several other key routes such as Bank Street and George IV Bridge will also be closed.

Despite these closures, taxi services are expected to become an essential mode of transportation for residents and visitors alike, seeking to partake in the festive celebrations. Taxi operators are preparing for the expected increase in demand, ensuring the availability of vehicles and drivers to accommodate the needs of the public during this busy period.

These road closures, while necessary for public safety and the smooth conduct of the New Year's Eve celebrations, will undoubtedly pose challenges for both taxi drivers and passengers. Navigating the altered traffic patterns and restricted access will require patience from both sides.
