Edinburgh hackney carriage taxi drivers are set for a fare increase after council members agreed a 2.9 per cent rise on all tariffs.

In addition to the 2.9 per cent increase on all tariffs, the “ADDITIONAL PASSENGER CHARGE” will go up to 40p from 30p.

The airport drop-off fee will double from £2 to £4 when there are more than three passengers and the festive tariff will apply to Christmas Day and New Year's Day, irrespective of the day of the week, as well as during the night times on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The council's licensing authority faced delays in reviewing and implementing a fare increase due to issues caused by the pandemic, but have since reviewed and researched a consultation which was launched to gain feedback on a possible fare rise.

Respondents to the consultation were mostly in support of the general tariff increases, though some complained that taxi fares in the city were too expensive.

The taxi fare tariff sets out the maximum charges which licensed taxis may charge any passenger for a journey within the city.
