A joint enforcement operation in rural Kirklees led to eight taxis being taken off the road due to serious vehicle defects.
The action, carried out on New Mill Road in Brockholes, saw officers from the Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team working alongside Kirklees Council Taxi Licensing and the DVSA. The operation responded to residents’ complaints about driver behaviour in the area.
During the checks, eight immediate prohibition notices were issued to taxi drivers. These were the result of faults found on their vehicles, raising concerns about the safety of some taxis operating in the district.
The day of action also led to 11 speeding tickets, along with further enforcement for illegal number plates and defective tyres. A stop search was also carried out.
The enforcement forms part of ongoing work under Operation Trimburg, a wider road safety initiative running across North Kirklees. Since March 2024, more than 2,000 illegal motorists have been dealt with by officers.
These efforts contribute to tackling the #fatal5 road offences — speeding, seatbelt non-compliance, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use while driving, and careless driving.
West Yorkshire Police continues its support for Vision Zero, a regional goal to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries across the area.
Inspector Vanessa Briggs, of the Kirklees Rural NPT, said: “Last week’s operation on New Mill Road was carried out as a result of community concerns about speeding at the location.
“We hope it has reassured residents that we are continuing to listen to information they supply us with about offending and are basing our policing on their priorities.”
She added: “We all know that driving at excess speed can cost lives and we are committed to continuing work to tackle this offending and reduce incidents involving the other #fatalfive offences.
“We also continue to urge anyone with concerns about a particular roads related issue in Kirklees Rural to contact us.
“Footage of any illegal driving can also be sent to the force’s Roads Policing Unit online using the Operation Snap portal.”
