A second private hire driver has been convicted after allegedly providing false information over a traffic offence, prompting Avon and Somerset Police to renew its warning to licensed drivers about the consequences of misleading investigators.
PC Patrick Quinton, the force’s dedicated Taxi Cop, revealed the latest case follows closely behind another recent prosecution involving a licensed driver who falsely identified someone else as being behind the wheel.
According to PC Quinton, a Bath and North East Somerset licensed private hire driver was detected travelling at 36mph in a 20mph limit in Chew Magna in January 2025. The driver subsequently nominated another person as driving at the time of the offence, but police believed that nomination to be false. The driver was charged with failing to furnish driver details.
Appearing before Bath Magistrates’ Court on 12 June, the driver pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six DVLA penalty points along with £390 in fines and court costs.
The case has now been referred to the relevant licensing authority, which will determine whether the driver remains a fit and proper person to retain a private hire driver’s licence.
PC Patrick Quinton said: “Following my message yesterday about drivers lying about their traffic tickets, I have the results of another case today.”
The latest prosecution follows another case highlighted by the officer this week, in which a South Gloucestershire licensed private hire driver received six penalty points and £870 in fines and costs after being convicted of failing to provide driver details following a red light offence.
Both cases have been referred to their respective licensing authorities for consideration.
