Fenland Council licensed taxi drivers set for HUGE 40% tariff increase

Fenland Council licensed taxi drivers could be set for a mammoth tariff increase later this month, but concerns mount that the significant fare increase could be too much for passengers.

David Patrick, an Independent Councillor and Hackney Carriage driver, warned that the new tariff, if passed, could push local taxi drivers out of business.

The proposed changes, currently awaiting Cabinet approval, could make Fenland one of the priciest areas in the UK for taxi travel.

Under the new tariff, a 5-mile journey, which currently costs £12.20, would rise to £17.40. A 10-mile trip, now priced at £23.80, would jump to £33.90. With Peterborough 23 miles away, fares could increase from £52.40 to a staggering £76.80.

Patrick highlighted growing discontent among local drivers and companies via a social media post, with many calling the proposed hike "excessive". He pointed out that several Hackney Carriage companies in Wisbech and March have already voiced their concerns, fearing the sharp rise could cripple the local taxi trade.

While a public consultation was held, Patrick questioned its reach, noting the absence of traditional local newspapers in the area.

The new tariff is scheduled for ratification by full council on 30 September.
