Finland’s taxis are turning green as distinctive new registration plates arrive in 2027
The Finnish Government has approved a decree requiring taxis to display green registration plates from 1 January 2027 as part of wider changes to the country’s taxi regulation.
Under the amended Vehicle Decree, taxi registration plates will feature black characters on a green background. The colour scheme has been chosen with visibility, accessibility and police supervisory duties in mind.
The decree, issued on 10 September 2026, implements provisions contained in amendments to Finland’s Vehicles Act. Those legislative changes introduced the requirement for taxis to carry distinctive coloured registration plates, commonly referred to as taxi plates.
The Government submitted its taxi regulation proposal to Parliament on 26 February 2026. Parliament approved the proposal on 26 June, clearing the way for the supporting rules covering the appearance of the plates.
The introduction of a separate plate colour will make vehicles registered as taxis easier for passengers, enforcement officers and other road users to identify. It also gives police a more immediate visual indicator when carrying out roadside supervision of the taxi sector.
Taxi businesses and vehicle operators will need to prepare for the new identification requirement ahead of its introduction. The information released with the decree does not specify the administrative process, cost or timetable for replacing existing plates.
The decree will also remove a reference to customs registration plates from the Vehicle Decree because those plates will no longer be issued.
The amendment is scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2027, alongside the associated changes to the Vehicles Act.
