Free Now set to introduce new €1 ‘technology fee’ for taxi passengers in Ireland

Updated: Jul 20, 2022

Ride-hailing app Free Now are set to introduce a new €1 booking fee for taxi customers in Ireland.

Users of the app received notification of the new ‘technology fee’ via their email inboxes. The new charge will start on 1 August.

According to Free Now’s updated terms and conditions it states: “To allow for the introduction of new mobility services such as eBikes and eScooters, provided by our mobility partners through the Free Now app.

“A technology fee of €1 will apply to all taxi trips booked and successfully completed via the Free Now app.”

The move to include a booking fee on top of the metered amount charged, follows a similar model used by rivals Gett in the UK. During periods of high demand ‘bonuses’ have been offered to taxi drivers to entice them to accept offers from customers on the respective apps.

There has been no news yet whether Free Now will introduce the ‘technology’ fee’ in the UK.
