Freenow by Lyft has announced an expanded partnership with Onsi to provide additional financial support for black cab drivers, with a focus on addressing rising living and operational costs.

The update, confirmed on 1 April 2026, introduces a new fuel savings offer through a Shell Fuel Card. Freenow partner drivers will be able to access discounts of 6p per litre on standard fuel and 10p per litre on Shell V-Power.

The fuel discounts are available at Shell filling stations as well as across partner networks including Esso and Texaco. The companies said the offer has already seen strong uptake among drivers, although no specific figures were disclosed.

The fuel card forms part of a wider package of benefits delivered through the Onsi platform. Drivers will continue to have access to accident and sickness insurance, which includes financial protection in the event of illness or injury, alongside lump sum payments linked to major life events such as the birth of a child or bereavement.

New fuel card discounts and existing financial support measures aim to ease cost pressures facing black cab drivers across the UK.

Flexible payout options also remain in place, allowing drivers to access their earnings when needed. The scheme includes between two and five free withdrawals per month.

In addition, drivers can access shopping discounts at major UK supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Aldi, providing further opportunities to reduce everyday expenses.

These benefits complement Freenow by Lyft’s existing driver support programmes, which include discounted EV charging through Octopus Electroverse and the Knowledge Subsidy scheme designed to help aspiring black cab drivers with training and licensing costs.

Danny O’Gorman. General Manager, Freenow by Lyft, said: “Taxi drivers are our partners, and their success is at the heart of everything we do. We know that rising fuel costs are putting a real strain on the trade, so we’re stepping up our support to help where it matters most. By expanding our discount schemes and benefits through Onsi, we’re investing directly in the people who keep our cities moving, ensuring they have the financial relief and lifestyle support they deserve.”

Ben Phillips, Head of Commercial at Onsi, said: “Our partnership with Freenow by Lyft is all about making life easier for drivers - providing support that helps with everyday costs, while also giving them greater confidence in their longer-term financial wellbeing. It’s about offering practical benefits that make a real difference, both on and off the road.”
