Glasgow taxi driver is “cleaning up” at his local rank with all money going to children’s charity
An entrepreneurial Glasgow taxi driver is cleaning up at his local rank - and making a few quid for charity in the process.
Stephen Lalley is top of the mops with his fellow drivers after they spotted him mopping his taxi while waiting at a Castlemilk rank, and asked him to do theirs too.
Now, while waiting on his next hire, safety-conscious Stephen wipes down his pals' taxi floors for £1 a go with all money generated going straight to the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund, which takes 300 children to Troon every June.
Stephen, who is treasurer of the charity, said: "I've always kept a clean cab but like many drivers we've really upped the ante during the pandemic. When I started mopping mine the guys asked me to do theirs and insisted on paying - I didn't want to take a penny but my good pal Davie Hodgson suggested the charity donation and it all took off from there.
"I take £1 a week for mopping four or five times a day - already we've raised £120 for the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund which will go towards next year's trip to Troon. I reckon we'll make that figure many times over before the trip so it really will make a difference.
"It's been a tough time for everyone but this is one wee positive which has many benefits - even cleaner taxis, a local charity benefiting and some much-needed camaraderie between drivers at the Glenwood Rank.
"In the style of George Bowie, I'd like to give a shout-out and thanks to Davie, Paul, Peter, Raymond, Les, Paul, Owlie and Harry and also a few others that have donated occasionally - cheers guys!"
