Taxi fares in Glasgow are set to increase by 3.32% following a review by the city’s Licensing and Regulatory Committee. The proposed uplift covers the period from March 2024 to February 2025 and comes after consultation with key industry representatives.
The proposal was put forward after the committee considered findings from an independent review carried out by Taxi Research Partners. The review recommended the 3.32% increase, which the committee provisionally supported at its meeting on 18 June 2025. Representatives from Glasgow Taxis Limited, Unite the Union Cab Section and the Glasgow Taxi Owners Federation were all consulted.
A public notice was then published in the Glasgow Times on 24 June 2025, inviting written responses from the public. One representation was received during the consultation period, which closed on 25 July 2025.
Under section 17 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982, local authorities are required to review and set taxi fare scales, following appropriate consultation and public notice. The law also allows for appeals. Should any licensed operator appeal the decision to the Traffic Commissioner for the Scottish Traffic Area, the fare changes will be suspended until the appeal is resolved.
The committee is expected to confirm the fare increase and instruct the Director of Legal and Administration to issue formal notice of the decision. No additional legal, financial, or climate-related impacts have been identified as part of the review process.
