GMB latest to issue safety guidance warning to London taxi and private hire vehicle drivers following disturbances
Updated: Aug 11
The GMB Union are the latest to issue an important safety message for taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers operating in the capital, amid growing concerns following recent events across the UK.
Steve Garelick, GMB London Region Organiser, has sought to reassure drivers that their safety remains a top priority. Drivers are advised to trust their instincts and avoid areas where they feel unsafe. Any incidents of racial or religious abuse or violence must be reported to the police, with 999 being the number to dial in emergencies.
Gathering evidence, such as photos or audio recordings, can be invaluable when reporting these incidents to the authorities. Drivers should also inform their licensing authority about any concerns or incidents, as these bodies can provide necessary support and guidance.
Garelick said in a statement: “Following the recent distressing events across the UK, we understand that many of you in the taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) industry are feeling concerned about your safety. We want to reassure you that GMB is here to support you."
He added: “We recognise that some members may feel hesitant about contacting the police. GMB is committed to supporting you through this process. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us for guidance and assistance.
“We encourage you to review safety information provided by app companies, operators, and licensing authorities. Your safety is a shared responsibility.
“GMB stands united with our members in the taxi and PHV industry. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure your safety and well-being.”
