GMB welcomes TfL move to provide taxi and minicab drivers with face masks and COVID signage
GMB London has welcomed the initiative by Transport for London (TfL) to support the taxi and private hire sector with the provision of supplies and advice to protect drivers and passengers in the fight against the spread of COVID-19.
The union, who represent workers in the taxi and minicab sector, have been informed that distribution of face masks, bottles of sanitiser, passenger-facing messaging and an instructional video on how to clean and sanitise vehicles will be distributed to TfL licensed carriers from Monday 7 December.
GMB London has been one of many driver organisations to put pressure on TfL for this type of help and protection, and therefore very much welcomes the announcement and commitment from TfL.
The union hopes that in the lead up to the festive season, and the expected increased demand, this initiative will help alleviate the risks, concerns and costs endured by taxi and private hire drivers. The move should also encourage usage by the travelling public knowing that carriers are adhering to COVID safety measures supported by TfL.
Steve Garelick, GMB London Region Organiser, said: “GMB Union are delighted to learn of this initiative giving protection to drivers and the public alike. This extra support is heartening at such a precarious time for the taxi and private hire trades that have been decimated by the pandemic.”
