Taxi and private hire drivers across the UK can now compare near real-time petrol and diesel prices directly through Google Maps, following the integration of the government’s Fuel Finder data into the navigation platform.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced the launch on Thursday 8 October 2026, saying motorists can search for nearby filling stations and view their latest reported fuel prices. It is the first time the government’s near real-time pricing information has been incorporated into Google Maps in the UK.

The new feature gives taxi proprietors, private hire drivers and fleet operators access to fuel price comparisons within a navigation service already used by many in the industry for journey planning. Drivers can examine prices at nearby forecourts before deciding where to refuel.

The information comes from Fuel Finder, the government-backed system introduced following recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority. Since 2 February 2026, petrol retailers have been legally required to report price changes within 30 minutes.

According to the Government, Fuel Finder now captures information covering approximately 99% of all fuel sold on UK roads. That figure relates to fuel sales covered by the scheme rather than the proportion of individual filling stations participating.

The pricing information is already available through services including Waze, PetrolPrices, AA, and RAC Fuel Watch. Its introduction to Google Maps extends access to motorists who may not previously have used a dedicated fuel comparison service.

The Government estimates that comparing forecourt prices could save an average car-owning household approximately £40 annually. That estimate should not be applied directly to taxi or private hire businesses, where annual mileage, fuel consumption and purchasing arrangements can differ substantially from household motoring.

For professional drivers, the financial benefit will depend on the difference between local pump prices and whether cheaper fuel can be purchased without additional mileage or lost working time.

A difference of 5p per litre would represent a £3 saving on a 60-litre purchase. For a driver purchasing 60 litres each week, that would equate to £156 over 52 weeks, assuming the same price difference remained available.

The new information could also support purchasing decisions within smaller private hire fleets, particularly where vehicles are refuelled individually rather than through centrally negotiated fuel contracts.

Fuel Finder data is not necessarily instantaneous. Retailers have up to 30 minutes to report a price change, and drivers should check the displayed forecourt price before purchasing. The Government provides a reporting service for discrepancies between published prices and those displayed at filling stations.
