Granite Underwriting has launched a new insurance product aimed at taxi fleet operators running 25 or more vehicles, expanding its presence in the UK’s specialist commercial motor market.

The managing general agent, part of Acorn Group, said the product is now available to brokers nationwide and is designed to support both private hire and public hire fleets, including complex and non-standard risks.

The new fleet product covers vehicles written on CCE, Book and Bonus, as well as new ventures entering the market. Granite said the offering draws on more than 40 years of taxi insurance experience within the wider Acorn Group, positioning it as a specialist solution for brokers working with larger operators.

A central component of the launch is a dedicated in-house taxi fleet claims team. Granite stated that managing claims internally allows for faster processing and more consistent handling, with the aim of reducing vehicle downtime and controlling associated costs such as repairs and hire vehicles.

New offering targets larger taxi operators with in-house claims handling and expanded underwriting capacity

The insurer also highlighted the potential for improved claims experience to influence renewal pricing. By reducing claims costs and exposure, fleet operators may be better placed to negotiate lower premiums, particularly in a segment where margins are often tight and operational disruption can have immediate financial impact.

The product is structured to accommodate higher-risk profiles often associated with taxi fleets. This includes drivers with multiple motoring convictions, a history of claims, or those operating in higher-risk postcode areas, reflecting ongoing demand in the market for insurers willing to underwrite more complex business.

Optional long-term agreements are also included within the offering, allowing fleet operators to secure pricing stability over a longer period and reduce the need for annual renegotiation, a feature that may appeal amid ongoing volatility in insurance costs.

Granite Underwriting distributes its products through a network of more than 200 broker partners across the UK, focusing on specialist and non-standard risks across motor and household lines.

Alistair Rose, Managing Director at Granite Underwriting, said: “This launch underlines our ongoing commitment to the taxi fleet market. We’ve built our reputation on designing tailored solutions for complex risks, and our in-house claims team means we can support taxi fleet operators from policy inception through to claims settlement.

“As the UK’s leading taxi insurer, we combine years of sector experience with a deep understanding of what taxi drivers and fleet owners need – a combination that positions us well to serve larger 25+ vehicle fleets.

“Brokers tell us they value direct access to underwriters who understand their client’s business and can structure products to meet specific requirements. That practical, market-facing approach helps speed placements and delivers better outcomes for operators and drivers alike.”
