Harlow Council unveils grants, free licensing and new ranks for black cab trade

Harlow Council has announced a support package for the town’s black cab trade, including grants, a period of free licensing and investment in new taxi infrastructure as town centre regeneration work continues.

The council said the measures are intended to support licensed Hackney carriage drivers facing disruption from major construction activity while positioning the trade for increased demand linked to the redevelopment of Harlow town centre.

A key element of the plan is the creation of new and improved taxi ranks across the town. This will include a dedicated main black cab rank at the new bus station, according to the council.

The authority said it wants black cabs to play a central role as the rebuilt town centre adds restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, events and a later-night economy. It said this could create more work for drivers throughout the day and evening.

Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said: “Our black cab drivers provide an incredibly important service to Harlow – offering residents a safe, professional and high-quality way to get around our town.

“As we rebuild the town centre, we know construction creates disruption. That is why we’re backing our drivers now with financial support, while building the new ranks and infrastructure they need to thrive in the future.

“We’re creating a busier, more vibrant Harlow from morning until night – and that means huge opportunities for our taxi trade.

“A thriving town needs a thriving taxi trade. We’re backing ours and putting black cabs at the heart of the new Harlow as we Build Harlow’s Future.”

The council has not yet set out the value of the grants, the length of the free-licensing period, eligibility criteria or delivery dates for the new ranks.
