Private hire and chauffeur operators are set to absorb further costs as Gatwick Airport increases its forecourt drop-off charge by £1 from 2 May. The new minimum fee will rise to £7, representing a near 17 per cent increase.
James Dow, General Manager London at global chauffeur firm Blacklane, criticised the move and called for better engagement with professional drivers. Dow said the increase amounts to a “hefty surcharge” applied without consultation.
He highlighted the lack of concessions for electric vehicles, noting this contradicts the airport's stated aim to support sustainable travel.
The new charge continues to apply to all vehicles using designated drop-off zones. Blue Badge holders remain exempt. Drivers can still use Gatwick’s Long Stay car parks without charge, although this is rarely practical for commercial operators under time constraints.
The forecourt drop-off fee was first introduced in 2021. Gatwick Airport says it helps reduce congestion and supports ongoing investment. The increase follows a review of operating costs.
Dow said: “Increasing airport drop off charges by almost 17 per cent is essentially adding a hefty surcharge to the private hire and chauffeur industry, and without consultation.
“There is no concession for drop-offs in an electric vehicle. This makes zero sense when nudging travellers to make more sustainable choices is a key remit for airports.
“We urge airports to engage with the professional driver industry and recognise that we are an integral part of their infrastructure, passenger service expectations and emissions reduction goals.”
