HOW TO PAY DROP-OFF FEES: Get set for barrier-free system at Stansted Airport ready to launch this month
Updated: Jan 19

London Stansted Airport has announced that its barrierless system for the Express Set Down (ESD) area will go live on 22 January 2025.
This new system will rely on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, designed to streamline the drop-off and pick-up process. Drivers will no longer need to stop at barriers when exiting, which is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Drivers using the ESD area must pay the charge by midnight the day after their visit. Payments can be made online at pay.stanstedairport.com or by calling 0345 017 5046. Payment at the exit point will not be available, and vehicles cannot be left unattended in the drop-off area at any time.
Frequent users, such as taxi drivers, have the option to register an account for automatic payment processing. Full details are available on the airport’s website under the Express Set Down section. Discounts for eligible local residents will remain unaffected.
Clear signage is already in place at the ESD area to inform drivers about the upcoming changes.
Anita Harrison, London Stansted’s Customer Operations Director, said: “Following our initial announcement last December of our intention to introduce a new barrierless access for vehicles using the ESD, I’m please to confirm the system will go live on 22 January.
“The ANPR technology will make dropping-off and picking up passengers quicker and more convenient, reducing driver waiting times and helping improve passenger flows and that is why we are confident it will improve the overall experience for users.”
