Torridge District Council is urging residents to avoid using unlicensed taxis and private hire vehicles. The warning comes as authorities across the UK continue to deal with the risks and problems linked to illegal operators.
Unlicensed vehicles pose safety concerns for passengers and put lawful drivers at a disadvantage. Torridge currently licenses 49 hackney carriages and 95 private hire vehicles. Each vehicle and driver must meet strict rules, including insurance checks, criminal record vetting, and regular vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness.
Council officers are reminding passengers to always check for official licence plates on the rear of vehicles and to inspect the driver’s identification badge before travelling.
Residents are advised to plan journeys in advance and book a vehicle where possible. Hackney carriages can be hailed on the street or at a taxi rank, but private hire vehicles must be pre-booked. Any vehicle not clearly marked or not booked in advance should be avoided.
The council is encouraging passengers to share trips with friends and to carry contact numbers for trusted taxi services when out and about.
Staci Dorey, Head of Legal and Governance and Monitoring Service, Torridge District Council, said: "It's really important that people understand the risks of using unlicensed taxis. Unlicensed drivers may lack proper training, their vehicles might not be insured, and they may not be regulated, potentially putting passengers at risk. Furthermore, using these services is illegal, as any passengers could face legal consequences if an unlicensed driver is caught.
"Our licensed drivers do a brilliant job providing a much-needed service to the local community. Before taking a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle, make sure it has a valid Torridge District Council licence plate at the rear and ask to see an ID badge. If in doubt, get out!
"If you are approached by someone in the street, offering you a lift, ignore them as this is classed as touting and is illegal."
