Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive is set to consider a proposal to review and update hackney carriage fares across the borough.
The move is designed to keep local taxi services viable while ensuring fare levels remain fair for both drivers and passengers. The review also meets statutory requirements placed on licensing authorities to keep fare structures under regular consideration.
If councillors approve the proposal at their meeting on Tuesday 30 September, a public consultation will follow before any new fare structure comes into effect. The earliest start date for revised fares would be 5 November 2025.
The consultation would invite comments from drivers, residents and other stakeholders. Proposals will be advertised to encourage feedback, and any objections raised during the statutory consultation period will be considered. Depending on the responses, the council will decide whether the fares should be amended or introduced as planned.
Hackney carriage drivers across the UK have faced rising operating costs in recent years, with many councils now reviewing fare levels to support the trade and maintain service availability. Ipswich’s approach mirrors that trend, aiming to balance affordability for passengers with sustainability for drivers.
Councillor John Cook, Ipswich Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport, said: “We’re proposing a fair and necessary uplift to hackney carriage fares to reflect current economic pressures and ensure the sustainability of the service. This review follows the statutory process and, subject to consultation, aims to introduce the new fare structure from November.”
