Enforcement officers from Liverpool City Council have reported a private hire vehicle operating with an out-of-date licence plate near Liverpool John Lennon Airport, highlighting ongoing compliance concerns linked to cross-border licensing.
According to a statement posted by the council’s licensing team, officers identified a Preston-licensed vehicle displaying an expired plate despite holding a valid licence. The plate, issued by Preston City Council, showed an expiry date of 28 November 2025.
The driver admitted to failing to replace the plate, telling officers he had been “lazy” in changing it over. The vehicle was subsequently reported, with enforcement action taken. The council did not specify the exact penalty applied.
The incident highlights persistent regulatory challenges around private hire vehicles operating outside their licensing authority area. While vehicles can legally undertake pre-booked work across boundaries, the drivers are required to ensure all licence conditions, including the display of correct plates, are met at all times.

Liverpool City Council’s licensing team used the case to reinforce expectations on drivers, warning against administrative lapses. The authority added the hashtag “#DontBeLazy” to its public communication, signalling a continued focus on visible enforcement activity in high-traffic areas such as airport approaches.
