Licensing officers from Liverpool City Council carried out a joint taxi and private hire compliance operation with Merseyside Police in Liverpool city centre, resulting in enforcement action against more than half of the vehicles inspected.
According to a statement posted by LCC Licensing, “a total of 37 licensed vehicles were inspected, with enforcement action taken against 21 vehicles and one PHV suspended due to safety concerns.”
The operation took place in the city centre during the evening, targeting licensed taxi and private hire vehicles operating at peak times. Such joint exercises are typically aimed at identifying breaches of licensing conditions, vehicle safety issues and driver compliance.
The suspension of a private hire vehicle on safety grounds indicates potential mechanical or roadworthiness concerns, although no further details were disclosed. Enforcement action can range from warnings and fixed penalties to immediate suspensions depending on the severity of the issue.

For operators and drivers, the figures highlight the continued focus from regulators on compliance standards, particularly in busy urban night-time economies where demand for taxis and PHVs is highest.
Liverpool City Council has not confirmed whether further operations are planned, but similar targeted checks are regularly conducted as part of ongoing public safety and regulatory enforcement efforts.
