Liverpool taxi driver and charity organiser celebrates turning 80 years old with his 40th outing for vulnerable children
Liverpool taxi driver Bernie Buxton MBE, who turned 80 in June, has marked his milestone year with an equally impressive achievement—completing his 40th annual outing for underprivileged children in Merseyside.
On Wednesday 27 July, more than 300 vulnerable youngsters enjoyed an all-expenses-paid trip to Southport. The children, selected through social services and various charities, travelled in a fleet of 50 taxis adorned with balloons and ribbons, creating an exciting parade to the seaside.
The Liverpool Taxi Drivers Children in Care Outing Fund, established in 1985 by local cabbies, has a longstanding history of providing memorable experiences for children in care. The fund was born from the grassroots efforts of taxi drivers who raised money by reaching out to fellow drivers, local businesses, and the public. Their initial success enabled them to organise a trip to the Blackpool Illuminations, and since then, the outings have become an annual tradition.
Over the years, the destinations have included Morecambe, Butlins at Pwllheli, Camelot, and even Euro Disney.
Buxton’s dedication, alongside the unwavering support of the Liverpool taxi community, has brought countless smiles to children who might otherwise miss out on such experiences.
