Transport for London (TfL) has issued travel guidance for those planning to attend events marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. The commemorations begin on the Early May Bank Holiday, Monday 5 May, and run until Thursday 8 May.
The capital will host a series of events, including a military procession and flypast, a poppy display at the Tower of London, and a concert at Horseguards Parade. Road closures and diversions are expected across key areas of central London.
On Monday 5 May, roads in Westminster will be closed to allow the military procession to pass. The closures are expected to cause disruption from 06:30 until 17:00. Areas affected include Parliament Square, Whitehall and The Mall.
TfL has confirmed that several bus routes will be diverted or curtailed as a result. This includes daytime and night services. Passengers are advised to check for updates before travelling.
London Underground services will run as normal. However, TfL has warned that stations close to the event sites will be busy. Westminster station is expected to see increased footfall between 09:00 and 11:00. Green Park will be busy from 13:00 to 15:00. Passengers are encouraged to consider alternative stations, including Waterloo, Embankment, Victoria, or Bond Street for the Elizabeth line.
Short-term crowd control measures may be put in place, including queueing and altered station entry or exit. TfL staff and event stewards will be on hand to provide assistance.
From Tuesday 6 to Thursday 8 May, events will continue with smaller impact on the transport network. While no major closures are planned, crowds may affect access around key venues.
TfL recommends checking live travel updates before setting off.
