A taxi driver has recovered the full cost of a fare and vehicle repairs after a passenger allegedly failed to pay and damaged the cab, according to the United Cabbies Group (UCG).
In a post shared on social media, the UCG said one of its members contacted the organisation after the incident. The group said its chair, Karen, intervened immediately and was able to trace the passenger involved.
The UCG claimed the passenger subsequently agreed to cover all costs arising from the incident, including the unpaid fare and repair bill for the damaged vehicle.
In the statement, the group said Karen “was able to track the passenger down, and made sure he paid every penny owed for the repairs and fare”. It added that “the bilker has now agreed to pay our member every penny that he’s owed”.
United Cabbies Group says one of its members has been reimbursed in full after a passenger allegedly left without paying and damaged a cab.
Fare evasion and vehicle damage remain ongoing concerns for taxi drivers, with incidents often leaving drivers out of pocket and facing time off the road while repairs are completed.
The UCG used the case to highlight the role trade organisations can play in supporting drivers when disputes arise, describing the outcome as an example of the benefits of membership support.
