The London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children will send a convoy of 68 licensed London taxis through the capital next Wednesday as volunteer cabbies transport children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to Hertfordshire Zoo for an annual charity outing.
The event, taking place on 8 July, will see children aged between four and 11 gather with their families at Asda on the Isle of Dogs from 8.30am before the convoy departs at 9.30am. The line of traditional black cabs is expected to arrive at Hertfordshire Zoo at around 11am before returning to London later that afternoon.
Many of the taxis will be decorated for the occasion as drivers compete in the charity’s Best-Dressed Taxi competition, adding to what has become one of the capital’s most recognisable charity convoys. The charity is also providing an all-inclusive day for the children, carers, teachers and volunteer drivers, with lunch, refreshments, ice cream, mini-golf and unlimited rides on the zoo’s train included.
The outing is organised entirely by volunteers, with London licensed taxi drivers giving up a day’s earnings to take part. According to the charity, the annual trips have been taking place for almost 100 years, providing memorable experiences for children who may otherwise have limited opportunities for days out.
Claire Zazzara, PR and Social Media Officer for the London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children, said: “There is nothing quite like the sight of dozens of traditional London cabs driving together to bring pure joy to these incredible children. Our drivers do this out of love, volunteering their time to make sure these kids get a day out they’ll never forget. Seeing the smiles on their faces when the convoy moves out makes every single mile worth it.”
