Man arrested after Nottinghamshire cab driver put in headlock and punched during journey

A cab driver was put in a headlock and punched in the shoulder after being attacked by two men he picked up in an area of Nottingham.

The victim was taking the passengers into the city centre but as he was driving they asked him to take them to Ilkeston instead.

When the driver refused he was assaulted, causing him to pull over on New Eaton Road in Stapleford.

The men then took his phone and threw it over a nearby hedge. The men also snapped the cab driver’s car keys before running off on foot towards Darkey Lane.

The incident happened between 7.20pm and 7.45pm on Saturday 26 September.

A man matching a description given to police was arrested nearby a short time after on suspicion of robbery. He remains in custody.

Detective Sergeant Luke Todd, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Thankfully the taxi driver wasn't seriously injured during this frightening incident which began while he was driving.

"We are working hard to trace the second suspect and we are appealing for anyone who was in the New Eaton Road area around the time of the incident and who may have information which could help us with our enquiries to please get in touch with us.

"If you can help please call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 692 of 26 September 2020, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
