A 20-year-old man has been arrested following an incident in Nottingham city centre that saw a private hire Uber driver subjected to racist abuse and spat at.
The incident happened at around 9.30pm on Saturday evening in Victoria Street. According to reports, an intoxicated man entered the stationary vehicle and demanded a ride.
The driver explained he could only take pre-booked passengers, as per private hire licensing rules. The man then became aggressive and stepped out of the vehicle, challenging the driver to a fight.
In response, the Uber driver began filming the incident on his phone. Despite being recorded, the man continued with verbal abuse, directing racist slurs and threats through the slightly open front passenger window. He then spat at the driver.
The matter was immediately reported to Nottinghamshire Police, who located a suspect a short distance away in Friar Lane.
The man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault and taken into custody. He has since been bailed with conditions while investigations continue.
PC Harry Brown, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “This was an appalling incident that left the victim too distressed to carry on with his shift.
“Officers did well to track down the suspect and take him into custody.
“It is simply not okay for anyone to subject anyone to racial abuse, and this kind of behaviour will never be tolerated by us as a force.
“Such behaviour can have a real, longstanding impact on victims, which is precisely why we take all reports we receive so seriously, and why anyone found to be involved should expect to find themselves in trouble with the police.”
