London Mayor Sadiq Khan has responded to a proposal from Neil Garratt AM, who called for the creation of a new network of modern Taxi and Bus Driver Hubs. The suggested hubs would include solar-powered features, EV charging points, and improved rest facilities.
In reply, the Mayor acknowledged the important role taxi and bus drivers play across the capital. He pointed to initiatives within the recently launched Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan, aimed at supporting the wellbeing of both current and future taxi and private hire drivers.
Khan highlighted the ongoing work between Places for London and charging operator Fastned, which will deliver a series of public EV charging hubs across five London locations. These are Hatton Cross, Tottenham Hale, Hillingdon Circus, Canning Town and Brent Crescent. At these hubs, toilet facilities are planned, with larger sites expected to offer rest and refreshment spaces for drivers.
Khan said: “London’s taxi and bus drivers provide a valued and important service in London.
“The upcoming Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan sets out actions that seek to improve the welfare of London’s current and prospective taxi and private hire drivers. Other initiatives that will provide facilities for taxi drivers include Places for London’s EV Rapid Charging Joint Venture with Fastned. This will deliver a series of public EV charging hubs across London, starting with five sites at Hatton Cross, Tottenham Hale, Hillingdon Circus, Canning Town and Brent Crescent. Where feasible, toilet facilities dedicated to hub users are intended to be provided and, at larger sites, rest and refreshment facilities.“
