A York taxi driver has been saved after quick thinking members of the public reacted and grabbed a defibrillator and treated him after a suspected heart attack.

It is believed that the man, who has not been named, suffered a cardiac arrest whilst driving his taxi. The vehicle eventually came to a halt when it smashed into the back of a scaffolding truck.

Members of the public, along with workers from CSL Scaffolding, rushed to the driver's aid. They were able to gain access to the defibrillator which was used to regain a heartbeat.

A spokesperson for the scaffolding company said: "All at CSL Scaffolding would like to send our thoughts to the Taxi driver who drove into the rear of one of our trucks this morning on Clifford Street after sustaining heart problems.

"A special thanks to 2 members of the public and our guys for grabbing the Defibrillator from York magistrates court and managed to get his heart going with CPR and DEFIB.

"Latest update is that he is doing ok in York district hospital."

A spokesperson for the cab firm which the driver works with, 659 Taxis, said: "Everyone at 659 Taxis would like to send our thoughts out to everyone involved in the accident this morning.

"We wish our driver a speedy recovery and would like to thank the members of the public and emergency services that helped at the scene."
