‘Might as well give your badge back’ if you join Uber, says prominent YouTube taxi driver

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

Associating with Uber would be equivalent to surrendering one's badge as a seasoned black cab driver, says prominent London cabbie.

Tom Hutley, a London taxi driver and YouTuber with nearly 90,000 followers, has been vocal about the importance of preserving the independence of black cabs.

Hutley expressed dismay at recent news, stating that any London cabbie considering partnering with Uber would be compromising the fundamental values of a black cab — safety, regulated fares, and unparalleled knowledge.

The popular cabbie highlighted the significance of the street hail, considering it the best and leading way to flagging down a taxi, and underscored the superiority of the "Knowledge" – the rigorous and comprehensive test that London black cab drivers are required to pass in order to obtain their licence.

Hutley said via social media: “Any London cabbie thinking of partnering with Uber will be voiding the USP’s of a black cab; Safety, regulated fares, and unparalleled knowledge.

“Associating with them, well you might as well give your badge back!

“Street hail is king. The Knowledge is power!”

Known for his passionate promotion of black cabs, Hutley has used his platform on YouTube to offer insights into the traditions, values, and challenges faced by London's iconic taxi drivers. Through his videos, Hutley has gathered a significant following and has become a respected voice for the taxi driving community.

On Wednesday, Uber announced its plans to introduce black cabs to its fleet in London, with drivers being able to sign up starting today.

The new service is expected to be rolled out in early 2024, offering passengers a chance to e-hail a black cab via the Uber app.
