The National Federation of the Blind of the UK (NFBUK) has taken a stand against the diminishing accessibility for black cabs in certain areas of London like Bishopsgate.

In a video shared on social media, Sarah Leadbetter, a registered blind individual who relies on her guide dog, highlighted the importance of black cabs in the city for those with disabilities.

Leadbetter emphasised that black cabs provide crucial accessibility features, including driver assistance, easy entry and exit, and ample space to accommodate her guide dog, Nellie. Expressing her disappointment with the restricted access of black cabs in certain areas, Leadbetter called for a change in the current stance taken against black cabs in the capital.

The video, shared by the NFBUK, sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments in accessing the Bishopsgate area of the City of London.

An NFBUK spokesperson said alongside the video: “Sarah Leadbetter explains why black cabs are important in London ‘It’s because they are accessible, drivers help you, they are easy to get in & out, there is lots of space for Nellie (her guide dog). Sarah is disgusted black cabs do not have access to all areas. This need to change.”

Highlighting the need for equal access to transportation, the NFBUK added in a subsequent social media post: "Mayor of London and City of London... London black cabs need access all areas with no restrictions. Anything less is discrimination and has no place in the capital. Please can you sort this out. Thank you."

The NFBUK's plea for accessible black cabs aligns with their mission to promote inclusivity and equal rights for visually impaired individuals. They argue that denying unrestricted access to an essential mode of transportation not only hinders the mobility of disabled individuals but also perpetuates discrimination.

As the discussion has been long standing, which even saw the Mayor of London take on the tax industry in court to ensure their access remains restricted during peak hours of the day through Bishopsgate. It is hoped that the fresh call for equal access to black cabs in all areas is likely to spark further conversations around accessibility and inclusivity in the capital.

In a city as diverse as London, ensuring accessible transportation options for all residents, regardless of their abilities, is a pressing matter for many. The NFBUK's advocacy for accessible black cabs serves as a reminder that true equality can only be achieved when every individual has the same opportunities to navigate and thrive within the city they reside.
