Compliance officers from City of Wolverhampton Council’s Public Protection team have been carrying out roadside inspections of hackney carriage and private hire vehicles as part of National Licensing Week 2026.

In a social media update published on Tuesday, the authority confirmed its compliance team was conducting checks on licensed vehicles, with a particular focus on tyre condition and roadworthiness.

The council said: “As part of National Licensing Week, our compliance team is out today inspecting private hire and hackney carriage vehicles, making sure tyres are safe and road legal.”

National Licensing Week brings together licensing authorities, police forces and regulatory partners from across the UK to highlight the work undertaken to keep passengers safe and ensure licensed vehicles and drivers comply with local regulations.

Enforcement officers inspected licensed vehicles as part of a nationwide campaign focused on safety, compliance and public protection.

Vehicle condition remains a key area of enforcement activity for all licensing officers. Tyres are one of the most closely scrutinised areas during inspections due to their direct impact on braking performance, handling and overall road safety. Drivers found operating vehicles with defective or illegal tyres can face penalties ranging from advisory notices through to licence reviews and prosecution in more serious cases.

The City of Wolverhampton Council operation reflects a wider national effort taking place throughout the week, with licensing teams carrying out vehicle checks, driver engagement exercises and targeted enforcement activity.
