Nearly 600 uninsured vehicles seized in London in just one week as police step up checks

A total of 573 uninsured vehicles were seized in just a single week by the capital's Metropolitan Police Service.

The shocking amount of illegal drivers in London has been highlighted by Detective Superintendent, lead for 'Vision Zero', Andy Cox, via his official Twitter account.

Cox, wrote: "Last week 573 uninsured vehicles seized in London. Important crime and road safety work. Uninsured drivers; - 2/3s active in other crime. 6-7x more likely to be in fatal crash. - more likely to fail to stop after crash.

"Support for law abiding road users who pay for insurance."

In addition to the findings, data has revealed that 'extreme speeding' has risen by 236% in London since Lockdown compared to the same time last year.

The term 'extreme speeding' is used to describe speeds so excessive, they can only be dealt with via a court.

Cox added: "20 & 30mph roads have most enforcement supporting vulnerable road users & recognising these roads higher frequency of crash risk. Key work contributing to a drop in serious crashes."

TaxiPoint have approached the force to find out if any taxi or private hire drivers were among the 573.
