NEW YEAR’S EVE: What roads are closed in London, what travel is available and how much is a taxi?
Updated: Jan 2, 2023
This year Transport for London (TfL) is not able to offer free travel on New Year's Eve.
Tickets for the New Year's Eve fireworks display in central London are sold out and anyone without a ticket is urged to stay away from the ticketed area in the capital.
Revellers can check out New Year's Eve events and attractions on the Visit London website.
What roads and bridges are shut in London?
To support the New Year's Eve fireworks display, there will be road closures in central London from early afternoon, with buses on diversion.
From 2pm, some bridges in central London will begin closing to traffic.
Visitors in the capital needing to cross the river in central London while bridges are closed, have been told to use Tube services instead, which will run all night.
Bridge closure times
Vauxhall Bridge: Closed from 11.30pm
Lambeth Bridge: Closed from 8pm
Westminster Bridge: 2pm
Waterloo Bridge: Closed to pedestrians at 4pm and closed to road traffic at 7pm
Blackfriars Bridge: Closed at 8pm
Other bridges in central London may close at short notice for public safety reasons.
What travel options are available?
Abellio bus services are affected by a strike. Some buses in central London will be on diversion from early afternoon.
There will be a Saturday service on all day routes throughout the day. A Saturday service on all night and 24-hour routes will also run and there may be more frequent buses on some routes.
On the tube some services will run all night except on Waterloo & City line (no service) and District line to Kensington Olympia. From 11.30pm on New Year's Eve until 2am on New Year's Day some stations near to the London New Year's Eve fireworks event or in other busy areas may become exit or interchange only at short notice.
Westminster and Chalk Farm Station will close at 9.30pm for crowd control measures and will reopen when safe to do so.
On the District line there will be no service to Kensington Olympia. The Waterloo & City line will also offer no no service.
Can I get a taxi?
Yes you can. Those looking for a taxi home should try to hail a cab away from the road closures and if possible on the side of the river they are travelling in to avoid long diversions.
From 8pm on New Year's Eve until 6am on Monday 2 January black cabs will charge an extra £4 per journey to encourage more drivers on to the road.
High prices are expected for private hire vehicles (PHV) services. Surge pricing maybe high for ride-hailing bookings at peak times of demand.
