The London black cab is getting a new look and purpose, as Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust introduces a fleet of white taxi-ambulances to help patients reach appointments.
The Trust has deployed 12 LEVC TX electric hybrid vehicles, resembling London taxis but adapted for NHS use. Painted white with ambulance-style markings, each one carries the NHS logo and the Trust’s name for clear identification on the road.
Designed for comfort and accessibility, the vehicles are fully wheelchair accessible. They feature integrated ramps, a low step, swivel seat, braille switches and high-visibility handles. These modifications aim to support people with mobility difficulties and sensory impairments.
The taxi-ambulances have already completed 60,000 miles across London, transporting 13,000 patients to and from Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals and community clinics. The vehicles serve patients who may struggle with other forms of travel, offering an alternative that is both accessible and environmentally cleaner.
Their compact turning circle makes them well suited for London’s traffic and narrow streets. Inside, the vehicles are quiet and spacious, with space for medical equipment and multiple patients if required.
The new taxis expand the Trust’s existing patient transport service, offering a greener option for vulnerable patients who rely on hospital-provided travel.
Daniel Crossey, General Manager of non-emergency patient transport at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “These new vehicles are more sustainable and accessible, but also look great. Everyone can identify a London cab – we’ve even had people try to flag one down on the street.
“The feedback we’ve had from patients who are using these is really positive – they like the comfort, the additional space and the flexibility they provide. And our drivers enjoy taking them out on the roads. They’re a great addition to our patient transport fleet.”
Jenny Jin, Executive Director at LEVC, said: “TX is a purpose-built electrified vehicle designed to serve a wide range of transport needs, and we’re delighted to see it making a real difference for patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’. With its iconic design, zero-exhaust emission capability and class-leading accessibility, the TX is perfectly suited to support NHS services. We’re proud to be working with the Trust and look forward to strengthening our partnership in the future.”
