Off-duty MET POLICE OFFICER assaulted taxi driver after taking cab without having the means to pay
A misconduct hearing has found a former officer who assaulted a taxi driver while off-duty would have been dismissed from the Met.
Former PC James Gillies, previously based at MetCC in Lambeth, was found to have breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour to the level of gross misconduct in respect of discreditable conduct.
The panel heard that on 16 February 2020 in Eastbourne, former PC Gillies took a taxi without having any means to pay the fare for the journey.
He then became rude and abusive towards the taxi driver and his colleague before punching the taxi driver.
After hearing all the evidence, the independent legally-qualified chair, Mr Akbar Khan, found the allegations against former PC Gillies were proven to have breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour and had he still be a serving officer, he would have been dismissed without notice.
He will also be added to the barred list held by the College of Policing. Those appearing on the list cannot be employed by police, local policing bodies (PCCs), the Independent Office for Police Conduct or Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary.
