ONE HUNDRED TX4s UPGRADED: The retrofit option that is keeping London taxis on the road longer hits important milestone
HJS Emission Technology has completed 100 installations of its retrofit system for Euro 5 TX4 taxis, offering eligible owners a way to upgrade existing vehicles as concerns grow about London’s future black cab supply.
The announcement comes as production of the current LEVC TX ends this month. Its next-generation replacement is not expected to reach the UK market until the end of 2027, raising questions about the availability of replacement taxis in the intervening period.
HJS says its system upgrades eligible Euro 5 TX4s to meet Euro 6 emissions requirements. Transport for London has approved the retrofit after it completed technical and emissions assessments, according to the information supplied by HJS.
Under current TfL rules, Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 diesel taxis have a maximum operating age of 12 years. Euro 6 diesel taxis can operate for up to 15 years.
An eligible Euro 5 TX4 fitted with the approved HJS selective catalytic reduction system may qualify for the longer age limit, provided it meets the required licensing conditions. That could give owners up to three additional years before their vehicle reaches its maximum licensing age.
The retrofit offers owners the option of retaining a taxi they already own and know, while upgrading its emissions performance and potentially extending its time in service. The additional years are conditional on eligibility and the relevant licensing requirements.
With the replacement TX not expected until late 2027, retrofitting suitable existing vehicles could help maintain the pool of licensed taxis in London.
