Parents reveal why London black cabs are the go-to option when travelling with babies

London black cabs are being recommended as a practical transport option for families travelling with babies and young children, particularly when navigating the capital with a pushchair, luggage and other childcare equipment.

The advantages were raised in an online discussion started by a visitor planning to travel around London with an infant aged under four months. The parent asked whether a travel stroller could be taken inside a black cab or whether hiring a child car seat would be necessary.

Although many contributors recommended combining walking and public transport, black cabs emerged as an important option when a direct journey was needed. One respondent summarised the appeal as: “Black cabs, door to door, loads of space.” Another said an accessible Tube or bus journey should usually work, but added that a black cab was useful “for when you’re really tired”.

The ability to board with a pushchair intact was repeatedly identified as a major benefit. One London parent said: “I feel fine about using black cabs as you can take the whole pram on with the baby in it.” Another contributor said black cabs were attractive because parents could “just keep baby in pram” rather than folding it before boarding.

That feature can remove one of the most difficult parts of travelling with a young child. On buses, pushchairs may have to be folded if the priority space is required by a wheelchair user or the vehicle is busy. Several contributors noted the practical difficulty of holding a baby while simultaneously folding a buggy and managing nappies, milk, clothing and other equipment.

The Underground presents a different set of operational challenges. Contributors advised parents to check step-free routes before travelling because not every station has lift access. Stairs, escalators, crowded trains and interchange distances can make journeys more demanding with a pushchair, even when assistance from other passengers is available. Older Tube lines were also described as sufficiently noisy for some parents to recommend infant ear defenders.

Black cabs provide an alternative that avoids station access, changes between services and the need to move a baby and equipment through crowds. Their availability for immediate street hails and at taxi ranks also distinguishes them from private hire vehicles, which must be pre-booked.

When it comes to seatbelts, government rules allow a child under three to travel in the rear of a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle without a child restraint when the correct seat is unavailable. Children aged three and over must use an adult seat belt in those circumstances.

Department for Transport guidance states that an appropriate child seat remains the safest way for a child to travel by car. The exemption exists because it is considered unreasonable and impractical for every taxi or private hire vehicle to carry the full range of seats required for children of different ages and sizes. The decision to use the exemption therefore rests with the adult responsible for the child.

There were a small number of contributors to the discussion that were uncomfortable with an infant travelling unsecured, despite the legal exemption and professional service provided.
