Taxi drivers are increasingly being issued Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) for turning right by driving on the wrong side of traffic islands, according to a warning from a representative who manages PCNs on behalf of taxi drivers in the capital.
The post, shared by @Hrawli on social media, highlights a growing frustration among road users caught in heavy traffic but choosing to cut across the right-hand side of traffic islands rather than waiting in line. The result is an £80 PCN for each offence.
“Traffic is frustrating but if you want to turn right, unfortunately you’ll have to sit in it until you’re at the turning,” @Hrawli said. “Unless you’re happy to pay an £80 fine.”
In response to the post, one user said they frequently saw vehicles ignoring the island rules, suggesting the practice has become more common recently. Another asked if the fines came with licence points, but was told it was limited to a PCN with a financial penalty only when issued by a local authority.
The post adds to growing conversations among drivers about inconsistent enforcement and the temptation to make risky moves in order to save time in traffic. For now, drivers are being reminded to remain patient or risk paying the price.
